The nominal LED current is set by an external resistor. A high-speed,
4-wire serial interface with up to 25MHz clock frequency, controls each
of the 8 channels using a shift register and latch configuration. A
serial output data pin allows multiple devices to be cascaded and
programmed via one serial interface. The CAT4008 features a blanking
control pin (BLANK), which can be used to disable all channels
independently of the interface. Additionally, on-chip thermal shutdown
protection disables the LED outputs if the die temperature exceeds a set
limit.
Despite that the current penetration rate of LED-backlit notebooks barely exceeds 10% due to LED patent issues and insufficient LED chip supplies, many industry players and research firms project that the rate will rise in the 10~20% range in 2008.Everlight Electronics and Lite-On Technology have extended their deployments over LED backlighting, while Epistar is also expected to provide LED OEM production from the second half of 2008.
Available with both white and color LEDs, the new bulb is screw-mounted on a waterproof 1156 base.
